Marketing & Event Planning with WiPP

Take advantage of this opportunity to participate with the inner workings of our up-and-coming organization! Work from home, set your own hours, and earn valuable experience while you do. Occasional in-person meetings with WiPP executives and committees will be required.

WiPP (Women in Portland Publishing) is a new local nonprofit organization and a multi-talented group of women with a wide range of publishing skills, from writing and editing to marketing, publicity, and graphic design.

Our group aspires to:
•Offer a scholarship to aspiring women in publishing
•Support the local publishing industry while assisting those who wish to become involved
•Make a name for itself with various community outreach projects and causes

Time winding down for Indigo literary contest submissions

Submissions due by Friday, August 4!

Indigo's first literary contest is a great opportunity to put your best fiction or nonfiction piece to the test! Fiction can be short stories or novel excerpts, and nonfiction can be essays or creative nonfiction. Maximum word count is 4,000; limit one submission per candidate.

All genres welcome, but special interests include multi-cultural themes, travel, feminism, young adult, health and wellness, and the arts.

Winners will receive professional editing services on the submitted piece as well as online publication.

Venue ideas?


WiPP will be hosting a publishing networking party in the near future (most likely September), and we're in need of some good Portland venue ideas. Because WiPP is a brand new nonprofit, little or no venue fee would be ideal. The event has the potential to attract several hundred professionals. We'd like to get hors d'oeuvres donated, but participants will surely be more than willing to spend money on drinks.

Publishing in Portland


As I was in Powell’s earlier this week, I was pleasantly surprised to see the new Best of Tin House, a collection of the best 27 short stories from the past six years.

Tin House has been a topic of conversation among the publishing community in Portland, and apparently across the country, for several years now, so seeing this massive collection boasting a beautiful bronze cover peer out at me among other featured local books gave me a surge of interest and pride in Portland’s publishing community. The book is available at Powell’s and other bookstores for $18.95.

On another note, Glimmer Train is hosting a Very Short Fiction Contest (less than 2,000 words), but the deadline of July 31 is rapidly approaching. Winners will receive $1,200, publication, and 20 copies of issue featuring their work. Details are at http://www.glimmertrain.com/vershorficaw1.html. Wrap it up and send it in today!

Don't forget to submit your fiction and nonfiction pieces to Indigo's literary contest, either. WiPP is also fostering artistic development this Thursday at the Graphic Design Workshop for skatepark tour group participants at Parkrose High School.
