Students in Publishing and the Graduate Literary Organization would like to announce the upcoming Language, Literature, and Diversity Festival. This event celebrates and promotes diverse literature at both PSU and in the community at large. The festival will take place March 5, 2009, at the Multicultural Resource Center of Smith Memorial Student Union at Portland State University from 7:10 p.m. It will be free to the press and public.
The festival will feature local poets Sid Miller, editor of the Burnside Review, Liz Nakazawa, editor of Ooligan Press's Deer Drink the Moon; author Paul Collins, editor of the Collins Library imprint of McSweeney's; and several PSU literary journals, including Pathos, and the Portland Review. The student-run event will also feature readings from Ooligan Press's upcoming releases Do Angels Cry? by Croatian author Matko Marusic, and The Best Dancer by Swiss-German author Christoph Keller.

Spotlighted Literary Events

Kristin Hannah, bestselling author of 16 novels including Firefly Lane and Home Again, will be reading and signing copies of her newly released novel True Colors. True Colors explores the bonds of sisterhood through the different trials and tribulations that threaten to break it and, ultimately, what it really means to be a family.

A couple of years ago, authors Ann Patchett and Elizabeth Gilbert met during a writers’ conference and through a series of letters became fast friends. They will be at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, discussing topics ranging from their literary works to their friendship to their own unique creative processes. Patchett is the author of such works as Truth and Beauty and Run while Gilbert’s legacy includes The Last American Man and her bestselling Eat, Pray, Love.

Ink-Filled Page Reading & Chocolate Tasting
Ink-Filled Page author Kessa Shipley will share her varied travel stories about Mexico, America, and beyond. Through her words, we'll visit candy shops, hot dog stands, and plazas full of demonstrators.Meanwhile, we'll make an ad lib candy shop stocked with international dulces so you can feed your sweet cravings while feeding your literary yearnings.

Ink Splash Youth Writing Workshop
Join the editors of Indigo Editing & Publications, publisher of the Ink-Filled Page literary journal, and special guest Jan Underwood, author of Day Shift Werewolf, for an inspiring day of literary creation.
The day will include group writing activities in English and Spanish* as well as personal creation time. We’ll also workshop one of your stories, highlighting your writing talent and offering suggestions for further exploration. Light refreshments will be provided.
This workshop is geared toward young adults in grades 6–12.
When: Saturday, February 7, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Writers’ Dojo, 7518 N. Chicago Ave., Portland
Cost: Free/$15 suggested donation. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Community of Writers.
Bring: Five copies of a story to workshop

*Participants do not need to be fluent in both languages to attend.
